The urge to text your ex, explained

What happens in your head at 1am, and what to do with the message instead of sending it.

5 min read

It's late, the house is quiet, and you've typed the message three times. Just checking in. Hope you're well. You know how it ends, and your thumb hovers anyway.

After a breakup, the missing person works a bit like a missing habit. Reaching out promises relief, and the promise is strongest when you're tired, lonely or reminded of them.

Why the urge peaks at night

Evenings strip away the structure that keeps you busy. Without distraction, the mind returns to unfinished business, and a breakup is the most unfinished business there is.

The message isn't really for them. It's for the part of you that wants the ache to stop.

What to do with the message

  • Write it in your notes app, not the chat.
  • Wait until morning and read it again.
  • Tell a friend the urge is here. Saying it out loud takes some of its power.

The urge passes a little faster each time you don't act on it. That's not willpower. It's your system learning that the ache ends on its own.

Keep going, out loud.
