Dating after a long relationship

Your last first date was before the apps looked like this. How to start again without rushing back to what's familiar.

6 min read

Your last first date was a long time ago. You're not sure what you want, only that you're ready to find out, or nearly.

The hardest part of dating again is rarely the logistics. It's meeting new people while carrying the shape of the old relationship: its habits, its hurts and its lessons.

Go slower than you think

After a long relationship it's tempting to rush into something that feels familiar. Familiar isn't the same as right. Give yourself room to notice what you like now, not what you liked then.

You're not starting from zero. You're starting from experience.

  • Decide what you're looking for, even if the answer is “not sure yet”.
  • Tell your story briefly and without blame.
  • Notice who leaves you calm, not just excited.

Keep going, out loud.
