The bids you miss

“Look at that bird.” It sounds like nothing. It's a small request for attention, a bid, and how you answer hundreds of them shapes how close you stay.

Turning toward a bid can be as small as looking up and saying “oh, nice”. Turning away is ignoring it. Over time, couples who turn toward each other more often build a reserve of goodwill that carries them through harder moments.

Connection is built in the moments nobody would think to photograph.

Practise noticing

  • For one day, count the small things your partner shares with you.
  • Respond to each one, even briefly.
  • Make a few bids of your own, and notice how they land.

Keep going, out loud.
